Announcement - Sheriff J.T. “Pancho” Chumley announced today that the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) interactive GIS (Geographic Information System) website has been updated with a new layer to provide additional public access to useful information. This map and historical crime maps can be located at http://www.tiptonco.com and then clicking on “Sheriff.” Crash reporting has been added to TCSO Crimes and county-wide Sex Offender Registry layers. Citizens who want copies of crash reports, but do not remember which law enforcement agency conducted the investigation, have had to call up to five different police departments, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, and TCSO to locate the agency that made the report. That information is now available on the online map. The location, date and time, Crash Number, and agency working the crash are all listed. While the map appears with the last two weeks of data displayed, a simple click on the “From Date” and select a date at or slightly before the crash date. Information will then show which law enforcement agency can provide your report. This is part of an ongoing promise that Sheriff Chumley made when elected in 2006 to build and maintain an organization that was innovative in all areas, including being responsive to the community. No other Tennessee law enforcement agency has a system like this that is open to the public.

Tipton County Emergency Unit Message - The TCEU would like to take a minute to warn the public of the dangers of sand bars on the Mississippi River. Newly formed sand bars due to the low river that look stable are in fact a very dangerous place to be. This is because water can be below the surface and can cause the sand to have a quicksand effect. The sand can shift and you can be pulled under the surface in a matter of moments with no warning. Please do not walk or drive on sand bars. Please do not swim in water holes on sand bars, there may be an under-current that can pull you under the surface. We want you to be safe while in and around the waters of the Mississippi River.
City of Covington to Implement Innovative Waste-to-Energy System - PHG Energy, a Tennessee-based alternative energy company, has announced an agreement with the City of Covington, Tenn., to convert waste to energy using PHG’s downdraft biomass gasification equipment and technology. The environmentally friendly system converts a wide range of waste materials or renewable biomass to a low-emission substitute for natural gas or other fossil fuels. Covington Mayor David Gordon found opportunity with the PHG system to reduce the landfill and transportation fees for 360 total tons of previously landfill- bound waste material the West Tennessee city of approximately 9,000 residents produces each month. PHG integrates established commercial technologies into one innovative system that simultaneously eliminates waste and produces heat that will be used for feedstock drying and the production of electricity. "Covington may be a small city, but we’re constantly looking toward the future in our thinking and planning," said Mayor Gordon. "We want to embrace technology that fits our situation, and this system lets us turn waste into an opportunity. Working with PHG is a win-win for Covington. It helps our environment and it helps our city financially. Simply put, we’re doing the right thing, in the right way, for the right reason." Click here for the press release.
