This migration is one of the most profound and interesting on Earth as these tiny insects travel thousands of miles from Mexico to Canada and back to the same forest in Mexico. The same individual butterfly never makes the entire journey, yet the species seems to be able to pass the information on to several generations of offspring throughout the migration.
